The dark room
The dark room, 2010
Installation. Newspapers, ink, wood, metal.
Variable dimensions
This installation functions as a personal review of the news of the daily press. This work, which was conceived as a work in progress in 2006, proposes from a selection of images of local newspapers, an atypical reading of them, where new stories and associations emerge based on this selection. After having collected newspapers from different countries for several years, in 2010 this work is realized and exhibited for the first time at the Shanghai Biennale. The pages of the press have been intervened with Chinese ink, canceling the written information and revealing photographic images, evocative of various themes such as violence, architecture, economics or politics. A pictorial, surreal, quasi-censorship intervention that assures its legitimacy from real news of a specific day. “The Dark Room” makes a double wink, to my interest in documentary photography and archiving on the one hand, and to the control and manipulation of information and news in contemporary society on the other. Images that, thanks to the magic of photography, or to the event that precedes the news, come to light -or are hidden- for the first time.
