Texts engraved with sandblasting on glass mirrors
Variable dimensions
I have always been struck by that text that appears on the rearview mirror of any car: “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear”. I see this sentence as a mixture of objective text and poetic digression on the nature of the image. Distance, appearance, physical presence, image duplication and inversion, among other themes, emerge in the connection we maintain with these small objects, which determine our safety on board. My interest and curiosity only increased when I found – on more than one occasion – rear-view mirrors broken by the impact of another car. The multiplication of the image then managed to take my imagination to extraordinary places. This work arises from these questions about the nature of the image, about its fragmentation and perpetuity in contemporary culture. It is said that we live in the age of the image, yet in this work I keep thinking about the moment when both Word and Image converge and question the reality of “the real”, and replace it with “the reality”.” of the “imaginable” and “possible”. This installation is an extension of the imago, which, according to Lezama Lima, is nothing more than the foundational moment of an image, the moment where everything begins.
