Portrait (Europa), 2006
Installation. Pine wood, black and white photography, color photography and metal.
Indefinite deposit of the Reina Sofia Museum Foundation, 2022 (Donated by Jorge Perez)
This installation, consisting of photographs of the capitals of the European Union in 2006 and coins stacked in a wooden display case, explores the notion of “capital” in its double sense: as a capital city and as a financial term, after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It proposes to question how the lack of tension provoked by the Cold War and the depolarization of the contemporary world have forced to reorganize and remake the idea of capital-cities. It examines how these city-capitals could have been transformed in some way by the new world economic order, following the call of Capital as the only one of contemporary society (Carlos Garaicoa)
